¿Plantón o semilla?

Seedling or seed?

Nicolás Gemio Ruiz

When we want to plant in our garden or even our patio, choosing seeds might be the most economical option, but sowing, cultivating, or germinating seeds is a process that not everyone is willing to undertake. Therefore, when we're going to grow plants, we might face a dilemma: seedlings or seeds?

Many amateurs may never have heard of seedlings. What are seedlings? What are they used for?

Seedlings have the advantage of being already developed; that is, the seed has already germinated and grown. All we have to do is transplant them to our raised bed or garden plot. Although seedlings are still somewhat less economical than seeds, the results in our urban garden are immediate, and for those looking for speed and simplicity, it's a highly recommended method.

Seedling

How do we plant the seedlings?

1. Prepare the plant: remove any damaged roots and those that are too long or cannot be untangled.

2. Dig a hole large enough to allow the seedling to grow properly. It is advisable to water the soil before placing the seedling in the hole.

3. When we place the seedling in the hole of our module , we must bury it up to the root collar, that is, bury it up to the intermediate zone between the root and the stem.

4. Gently compress the soil as you transplant.

5. Water 3 or 4 times a week, avoiding excess moisture or dryness.

Below, we show you the advantages and disadvantages of each one:

SEEDLING

- Ease of cultivation.

- Economical, but not as economical as seeds. For our urban garden, it's a highly recommended option, as it's very easy to plant and saves us time and effort (obtaining the seeds, storage, germination, and initial care for their development).

- Once acquired, we will only have to place them in our module .

- Guaranteed garden: we avoid the possible failures that arise in the seed germination process.

SEED

- A laborious process that requires more time and patience, which is the time it takes for the seed to germinate and transform into a plant.

- Germinating our seeds and watching them grow adds greater personal value to our module .

- More economical than using seedlings.

So, you might be wondering, what should I choose? Well, there isn't really one right answer; it all depends on your preferences and goals. If you want speed and simplicity, the best option is to buy seedlings; if you're looking for challenges and satisfaction, it's recommended to use seeds and germinate them. Every garden is unique, so the option you choose will be the one that best suits your urban garden . The important thing is to grow our own food and reduce our environmental footprint as much as possible, so get started and join the urban gardening revolution!
