¿Cómo preparar la tierra para la siembra?

How to prepare the land for planting?

Nicolás Gemio Ruiz

One of the most important tasks is preparing the soil for planting to ensure a good harvest right on your terrace. We recommend that the soil in your raised bed or patio is very well prepared – it's important not to compact the soil: that is, once you add it to your bed, sprinkle it with your hands and avoid compressing it with heavy substrates. This allows your plants to breathe and develop more easily. It's advisable to use a light substrate – for example, one that contains some coconut fiber – but if you use soil from elsewhere, make sure it has as few stones or other natural elements as possible that could hinder root development.

When preparing the soil for planting, we can also take the opportunity to add nutrients, such as woody organic matter at the bottom of the pot (this technique is called hugelkultur ) or compost, for which we advise you to have a  worm composter at home.

STEPS TO FOLLOW FOR PREPARING THE LAND

1. Break up any clumps: As mentioned earlier, the soil should be loose and light. This is also the time to add compost to further enrich the soil.

2nd Remove any foreign elements that may have fallen from the surface, as they can hinder planting and the subsequent rooting of the plant.

3. Apply a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and provide nutrients to surface microorganisms. This is preferably straw or dry leaves, spread evenly over the bare soil, except in areas where small seeds requiring direct sunlight to germinate have been planted.

Once the soil is prepared for planting, nourishing it is very important. Adding liquid or solid compost will ensure the perfect development of your urban garden. If you don't know how to get started with urban gardening, visit our blog or Contact us directly .
