From challenge to movement: the story of #HazloHuerto

Urban Green Club SCA

At Urban Green Club , we've always believed in the power of nature to reconnect with and transform our spaces. A few months ago, we launched an invitation to our community that grew into something much bigger than we imagined: the #HazloHuerto challenge. What began as an idea for urban gardening transformed into an inspiration that showed us that urban environmental activism is possible and that urban regeneration starts with a single seed.

A Challenge for Urban Regeneration

We launched #HazloHuerto with a simple mission : to inspire action through Guerrilla Gardening and prove that anyone, regardless of experience, can sow change. The response was an echo of passion that spread, demonstrating that there is a community eager to leave a green footprint on the asphalt.

From Gesture to Action: An Urban Garden Grows in Every Corner

The participants showed us that creativity and enthusiasm are the driving force behind change. With a simple act, like planting a seed or a seedling in a forgotten corner, they demonstrated that any gesture, however small, can grow and become an urban garden . Their actions not only transformed spaces; they showed that it's possible to inspire neighbors to see opportunities where before there was only asphalt, and that a single garden can motivate an entire community, even to create gardens on their rooftops . The challenge was a simple process:

  • Finding a forgotten space.
  • Plant or create a garden.
  • Share the process on social media with the hashtag #HazloHuerto .

This infographic from Urban Green Club explains the 5 steps to participate in the Guerrilla Gardening challenge #HazloHuerto (Make it a Garden). The process includes finding an abandoned space, transforming it into an urban garden, and posting a video for a chance to win a Pro Worm Composter.

Gestures that inspire deserve recognition.

In recognition of her effort, the prize for the winner was a key tool to continue the work: a Urban Green Club Pro Worm Composter But the excitement of seeing so much participation led us to do something more: we decided to give a Garden Worm Bin as a second surprise prize and two coupons from our online store to recognize the work of two extra people.

This award not only encourages vermicomposting , a vital process for obtaining homemade fertilizer for plants , but also promotes natural fertilizer for plants and thus continues cultivating change from home.

To see how the Pro Worm Composter works and how it can help you start fertilizing your plants, we invite you to watch this video.

And to discover more about the Garden Worm Bin , a compact and perfect tool for getting started in composting, you can visit its official website.

Protagonists of the Transformation

Among all the proposals, some interventions particularly inspired us. Choosing the winners was difficult , but we want to congratulate @fionagannon_ and @aitanaasecas for their creativity and dedication. Their actions reminded us that, with intention and will, forgotten spaces can be transformed into sustainable communities .

The winner of the #HazloHuerto challenge, Fiona Gannon, receiving her prize of a Pro Vermicomposter from Urban Green Club.

The winner's photos, alongside her dog, bear witness to her actions: she walked the streets of her neighborhood in Granada, leaving flower seeds in the tree pits. A simple act that, once germinated, will provide food for pollinators and beauty for her community. Her project is proof that a single action can generate a positive impact on a neighborhood .

The Seed Is Already Planted: This Is What's Coming

The success of this challenge showed us that #HazloHuerto can't just be a one-off campaign. It's the beginning of something much bigger: a citizen movement that will continue to grow. The energy you shared with us and your desire to grow together inspired us to turn this initiative into a permanent force.

We'll soon share what this new chapter means and how you can be an active part of it. For now, we can only tell you this: if you dare to plant in the city and be an agent of social change , you're already part of #HazloHuerto ! Stay tuned to our social media and blog .

To see the true potential of these initiatives, we invite you to watch our documentary " Between Roots and Asphalt | A Documentary about Urban Gardens ." In this short film, filmmaker Prunelle Girardeau explores the positive impact of urban gardens through the Armilla municipal garden and the people who participate in it. It's a testament to how an abandoned space can be transformed into a community.
